Beside, not opposite

Different kinds of company ask different things of us. Here are four ways of being together, each with a Canberra starting point.

Not every kind of company needs a conversation across a table. Some of the easiest time we spend with other people happens side by side: reading in the same room, working on the same garden bed, waiting for the same tile to come round. This atlas maps four of those rhythms. Choose what you want from the time, and it narrows to the kinds of company that fit.

What do you want from the time?

Showing all four kinds of company.

  1. Parallel company

    01A little quiet

Reading your own book while someone else reads theirs. The activity is individual; the time is shared.

Does company always need a conversation?

A Canberra starting point. The ACT Government’s bookworm’s guide lists several Canberra reading groups, including silent book clubs.

Read the bookworm’s guide (ACT Government, Our Canberra (July 2026))

Source read 2 November 2026. Check each host for current sessions, eligibility and access.
  2. Side-by-side effort

    02A shared task

A garden bed, a repair, a thing being made. Something beyond the conversation gives the meeting its shape.

What changes when we have something to do with our hands?

A Canberra starting point. The Canberra Environment Centre’s calendar lists garden sessions and workshops.

Source read 2 November 2026. Check the host for current sessions, booking, cost and access.
  3. A little friendly friction

    03Something to play

A shared set of rules, a few decisions, a reason to stay for one more round.

How much of the conversation happens through the game?

A Canberra starting point. U3A Canberra lists a Northside mahjong activity, and separates its experienced-player group from occasional beginner classes.

Read the organiser’s details (U3A Canberra)

Source read 2 November 2026. Membership, eligibility and places need checking. This is not a drop-in beginner session.
  4. Become a regular

    04A familiar room

The same walk, the same public room, the ordinary recognition of seeing someone again.

Can familiarity be an occasion in itself?

No listing for this one. A familiar room is the library you already use, the walk you already take.
